Malignant disease of the head and neck comprises a diverse group of diagnoses and survival patterns. The purpose of this session is to review the classification of head and neck cancer and the specific diagnoses and required surgical procedures that impact oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. Novel approaches to the surgical management of HPV-related oral and oropharyngeal cancer, skin cancer, sarcomas of the jaws and salivary gland cancer will be emphasized. Case presentations will conclude the session to emphasize important points made during individual presentations.

Identify the diagnostic classification of head and neck cancer.
Explain the increase in HPV-related oral and oropharyngeal cancer, particularly as it applies to the incidence of these cancers in young people.
Discuss the surgical techniques associated with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers of the head and neck.
Determine the prognostic significance of sarcomas of the jaws and the clinical presentation of metastatic lesions of the head and neck region.
Describe the diverse array of salivary gland malignancies as well as the particulars associated with their surgical management.
