Dr. Beatrice Hoffmann graduated from the University of Heidelberg Medical School, Germany, where she also received her first education in diagnostic ultrasound. She initially begun training in internal medicine in Germany, before completing her emergency medicine residency training at York Hospital/Penn State University, graduating in 2003. She served as the Emergency Ultrasound Director at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, founding the first emergency ultrasound fellowship and emergency ultrasound division at Johns Hopkins.
She is now the Emergency Ultrasound Division Director at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
She has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters on the topic of emergency ultrasound, lectured at national and international venues in 5 continents, and was the founding editor of the educational emergency ultrasound website, www.sonoguide.com, for which she received the national ACEP Ultrasound Section Award. She is the founding chair of the Academy of Emergency Ultrasound of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and was elected corresponding member of the German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM).
