Dr. Sigurdsson earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Iceland in 1988, and his Certificate in Endodontics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992, where he also received a Master of Science degree with emphasis on neurobiology and pain perception.
Dr. Sigurdsson served as a full-time faculty member at UNC from 1992 until 2004, first as an assistant professor and then promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2000. Appointed as the graduate program director of endodontics in 1997, Dr. Sigurdsson severed in that position until 2004. From 2004 to 2012 he maintained a private endodontic practice in Reykjavik, Iceland and London, UK as well as being an honorary clinical teacher in Endodontology, UCL Eastman Dental Institute, London UK
In 2012 Dr. Sigurdsson was appointed as the Chairman of the Department of Endodontics, NYU College of Dentistry. Additional academic positions: From 2004 an adjunct associate professor at UNC, from 2011-2013 Honorary clinical associate professor in the Faculty of Dentistry, the University of Hong Kong and interim-Chairman of Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, NYU-CD.
Dr. Sigurdsson is past president of International Association of Dental Traumatology and he served as a director of the American Board of Endodontics from 2014 to 2020 and was the President of the Board 2019-20. He has been invited numerous times to lecture in 47 countries on the topics of pain, endodontics, dental trauma and/or forensic sciences. Dr. Sigurdsson is the 1998 recipient of Edward M. Osetek Educator Award.
