I am a DDS with specific training in basic/applied immunology and oral histology, and principal investigator of the OSTEOimmunology laboratory at the School of Dentistry of Bauru of Sao Paulo University. In the past few years, I have coordinated a series of studies focused on immunoregulation processes underlying the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory osteolytic diseases and related to the understanding of the reasons underlying individual variations in the host response and its consequences to disease susceptibility/resistance phenotypes. Such studies resulted in a series of cause-and-effect demonstrations of the role of specific leukocyte subsets in disease pathogenesis, as well as demonstrations of mechanisms involved in the chemoattraction of definite cell populations to periodontal tissues. In addition, we have been directing efforts towards the understanding of ‘constructive inflammation, which expands the therapeutic possibilities from just minimizing tissue damage to reconstructing damaged tissue based on directing specific cell types to injury sites. In this context, we have determined cell types and mediators responsible for the determination of a pro-regenerative environment, which includes the chemoattraction of cells with regenerative potential (such as stem cells) and with the capacity of producing growth factors that support proper cellular differentiation and counteract exacerbated response.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
