In some individuals, acute pain does not resolve despite adequate treatment and instead progress into chronic intractable pain. Many of these individuals have risk factors that predispose to the development of chronic pain. Although Endodontic therapy is known to be highly successful, persistent pain following endodontic treatment is estimated to be between 5.3-10%. This presentation will review various factors predictive of persistent pain states. Identification of these risk factors will inform and influence patient and procedure selection, as well as prognosis and outcome. Endodontists play a vital role in chronic pain prevention.
