Abstract: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is considered a risk factor for root resorption. This retrospective analysis aimed to evaluate the three-dimensional root surface changes following OTM of teeth with and without a history of nonsurgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). Treatment records of 213 orthodontic patients were screened. Seventy-six teeth were included in the analysis: teeth with a history of NSRCT (n=38) and their respective contralateral tooth without NSRCT (n=38). All 76 teeth were evaluated using CBCT imaging at two time periods: before OTM (T1) and after OTM (T2). Each tooth was segmented then converted into a mesh model to allow for quantification of volume and surface area at both time periods. A linear mixed-effects model was used for statistical analysis. The average change in volume following OTM in teeth with NSRCT was 22.48 mm3, and 32.44 mm3 in teeth without NSRCT (p = 0.0003). The average percent change in volume following OTM in teeth with NSRCT was 2.62%, and 4.10% in teeth without NSRCT (p = 0.0000008). The average change in surface area following OTM in teeth with NSRCT was 13.01 mm2, and 19.95 mm2 in teeth without NSRCT (p = 0.0003). The average percent change in surface area following OTM in teeth with NSRCT was 2.09%, and 3.38% in teeth without NSRCT (p = 0.00001). The results from this study suggest that endodontically treated teeth are less susceptible to root resorption following OTM than their vital counterparts.
