NS-9 - Understanding Laser-assisted Endodontics - Rethinking the Endodontic Experience

Laser-assisted endodontics is emerging as one of the more important technologies in the management of endodontic disease. Much confusion exists as to which lasers are the most efficacious and conflicting ideas have emerged on how to apply the laser energy within root canal systems. This lecture will review the mechanism of action of lasers within confined root canal systems as well as fluid dynamics within open and closed systems and the consequences of imparting a high velocity to irrigating solutions. An evidence based, laser-assisted treatment protocol will be presented that maximizes deep dentinal cleaning and disinfection, while maintaining foraminal patency, facilitating canal shaping and promoting drainage and decompression of periapical tissues. By re-thinking treatment concepts and putting to rest many of the dogmas that have governed endodontics for generations, the introduction of this innovative treatment paradigm will enhance success while significantly reducing stress and improving productivity for the endodontist.
