This session will give the participant an overview of TMD and other orofacial pain conditions as it relates to their own practice. This includes the prevalence in the general and clinical populations, and the clinical presentation of TMD, neuropathic pain and other relevant conditions. We will discuss the diagnostic procedure to identify the most common TMDs, and differential diagnostic measures that may help distinguishing pain due to TMD and e.g. neuropathic pain from pain due to endodontic disease. Case complexity is an important factor to consider for patients with pain complaints, and evidence-based management of patients will be discussed with special focus on TMD.

Learning Objectives:

Explain the prevalence of TMD in various populations
Identify signs and symptoms that may suggest a non-endodontic cause of the patient’s pain complaint, and be aware of relevant differential diagnostic measures
Describe the evidence-based approach to TMD care and recognize factors that contribute to making patients more complex
