(TC17) Suspected Cystic Lesion: Treatment Options and Management

Abstract: Peri-apical cysts are the most diagnosed odontogenic cysts. Generally, they are found in the anterior maxilla and form as a result of separation of offending stimuli from the surrounding tissue. Treatment for large non-resolving peri-apical cystic lesions include decompression, marsupialization or enucleation followed by flap surgery. The decompression technique is the more conservative treatment approach. This treatment can result in healing or help reduce the size of the lesion. This result is achieved with the release of pressure created by inflammatory mediators with the use of a drain in the cystic lesion. Surgery may be needed if the cyst does not completely heal. Another approach in managing non-resolving peri-apical lesions include placing a calcium hydroxide dressing between 3 to 6 months in order to induce bone generation and decrease the size of the lesion. Two case reports are discussed with their different treatment approaches.
