General Dentist South Amboy, New Jersey, United States
Abstract: The relationship between the general dentist and the endodontist should be dynamic, providing for a better understanding of wants or requirements and leading to improved outcomes for patients. The dentist-specialist relationship should extend beyond just referrals, to a relationship in which communication can provide a greater understanding of expectations prior to referral or return of patient, treatment provided to patients, and education regarding methods, materials, and especially standard of care. Adhering to the standard of care is absolutely paramount in providing quality treatment and promoting integrity within our profession. Surveys have shown limited use of the rubber dam for isolation during root canal therapy among general dentists even though the use of a rubber dam has been considered the standard of care, from clinical and legal perspectives, for decades. Understanding the need for a standard, establishing the standard, and effectively communicating that standard are key components in adherence by all practitioners, whether endodontists or general dentists. The AAE continually promotes research to better understand all aspects of endodontics and subsequently the AAE has established multiple standards. Unfortunately, proper communication of these standards has either been limited in scope or not fully understood by all within the general dentist community. The goal of this table clinic is to discuss key traits of effective communication, as well as methods to improve communication between the endodontist and the general dentist.
