(TC09) The Rubber Dam Frame: A Novel Design a Double Hinged Rubber Dam Frame with a Magnetic X-ray Sensor Holder

Abstract: Rubber dam use decreases microbial contamination, increases patient protection and treatment efficacy. Despite being considered a standard of care by endodontists, a recent survey revealed only 44 percent of general dentists reported using a rubber dam for all root canal procedures. Reasons cited for not using rubber dam include low patient acceptance, time, insufficient training, difficulty in use, cost, and low reimbursement fees. The aim of this table clinic is to present a novel, double hinged rubber dam frame along with a magnetic x-ray sensor holder that is comfortable for the patient, saves time during the procedure, easy-to-use, and cost-effective while maintaining asepsis and patient protection. The ability to fold the hinged rubber dam frame allows the practitioner to perform a variety of tasks while keeping the rubber dam and frame in place. This includes, administering local anesthesia, placing, and removing a bite block, saliva ejector, or cotton roll, and positioning a sensor for radiographs. The frame can also be folded to increase air exchange, making it easier for patients to breathe. The magnetic sensor holder and handle also have advantages over existing armamentarium. These improvements include a streamlined design that is sleek, user friendly, and reduces radiograph re-takes. The handle of the positioning device attaches to the sensor holder by a magnet. This allows the x-ray sensor to be easily positioned and held in place without relying on the patient to bite down.
