(TC37) Polytetrafluoroethylene Tape with Electronic Apex Locators

Abstract: Electronic Apex Locators (EAL) play an integral role in determining patency during endodontic therapy. However, there are multiple scenarios where the EAL may not work properly. This includes an overreactive canal length indicator, such as when the EAL measurements are too short, has poor accuracy or erratic results. According to the troubleshooting section of the J. Morita’s Operation Manual for the Root ZX II Apex locator, one of the possible reasons for this is that the file is touching a metal prosthesis. The conductive properties of these restorations, such as amalgam and gold, complete the electrical circuit when a file contacts metal instead of the periodontal ligament, resulting in a premature signal that patency has been achieved. Although most dental providers will recognize the premature signal, time and patience are often lost by the provider when adjusting the file placement and avoiding contact with the restoration. Polyterafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape is an inexpensive, thin, and a non-conductive material that can create an insulative barrier around the file. The purpose of this table clinic is to present a method to decrease clinician time in acquiring patency with the Morita Root ZV II Apex Locator with a material that is already easily available in most dental operatories. A benchtop set-up will be used to illustrate the concept. PTFE tape can decrease treatment time and clinician frustration when working with metallic restorations in acquiring an accurate patency length using an EAL.
