(PR17) Prevalence of Invasive Cervical Resorption Among Various Patient Demographics

Abstract: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) has become more frequently detected with the increased utilization of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aim of this study was to assess the current prevalence of ICR among various patient demographics to increase clinical awareness. ICR images were acquired by Veraview X800 Morita scanner obtained through CBCT under the same settings. Three independent evaluators (oral and maxillofacial radiology resident, endodontic resident and board-certified endodontist) evaluated the presence, location, site of origin and extent of the ICR per Heithersay classification. Statistical analysis was completed to assess the correlation of ICR occurrence with patients’ demographics. A total of 41 ICR cases from 33 patients were included in the study. Of those patients, 75% were over the age of 40. In the evaluation of ICR location, results showed 65% of the total ICR lesions originated buccal or lingual. Maxillary anterior teeth presented with 100%, mandibular posterior teeth 92% and mandibular anterior teeth with 80% buccal or lingual site of origin. Maxillary posterior teeth presented with a dissimilar site of origin at 63.6% mesial or distal.

Conclusions: The prevalence of ICR was highest among patients over 40 years of age. ICR lesions are most frequently located on the buccal or lingual surfaces, with the exception of maxillary posterior teeth where ICR presents most commonly on the mesial or distal surfaces. Patients of known prevalence should have careful examination to assist in the early detection of ICR so as to offer therapeutic approaches in early stages as seen clinically necessary.
