Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a progressive autoimmune disease that proceeds in three stages. T1D is defined by the presence of at least two types of islet autoantibodies and continues through different metabolic stages of normoglycemia (stage 1), dysglycemia (stage 2), and hyperglycemia (stage 3 clinical T1D requiring insulin therapy). Screening for the presence of islet autoantibodies and diagnosis of early-stage T1D may reduce the risk of DKA at onset of stage 3 clinical T1D and help improve short- and long-term outcomes. In this session we will discuss the importance of screening and staging in T1D, possible benefits of early diagnosis of T1D, and clinical impact of screening programs.
