Abstract: As audiologists we rely on the audiogram for nearly everything, including patient counseling. However, patients rarely retain information presented on an audiogram. This session will review the importance of health literacy for counseling and offer alternatives to the audiogram when discussing hearing with patients.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the impact of health literacy on audiology counseling.
Analyze counseling skills used to explain the audiogram and recognize how it may inhibit patients understanding of hearing loss and its implications.
Identify alternative ways to counsel patients about hearing loss using patient-centered and shared-decision making counseling tools and strategies.
