Abstract: The study objective was to examine the association between pre-operative comorbidities and cochlear implant (CI) speech perception outcomes. Seventy-two adult CI patients were retrospectively evaluated using the Adult Comorbidity Evaluation scale (ACE-27). Speech perception scores were tested pre-operatively and post-operatively. The greatest improvement was seen in patients with the lowest comorbidity category. These results indicate that comorbidity severity is an important factor in CI speech perception outcomes, and combined with other factors, may better account for variance in CI outcomes. Audiologists should consider comorbidity severity when counseling CI candidates regarding speech perception outcomes.
