While practicing as an educational audiologist, Stella earned her PhD in Health Professional Education; while working in private practice, she completed a CIHR post-doctoral fellowship in medical education, health systems and services.
At the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals, Stella is the Director of Research, Centre for Faculty Development; education scientist, Centre for Ambulatory Care Education and The Wilson Centre (which is world-renowned for advancing the science of health professions education and practice). Stella teaches the research & service learning course in the Dept. of Speech-Language Pathology and is appointed to the College of Audiologists & Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario's Practice Advisory Committee.
Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and by foundations like the AAA Foundation, Stella's research employs rigorous social science approaches to study practice-based knowledge within complex health care systems and structures. Stella's work has impacted scholarship, policy, and practice.
