The video head impulse test is an ear-specific test useful when detecting disorders of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), first described in the 1988 article “A Clinical Sign of Canal Paresis” 1988 by Drs. Halmagyi and Curthoys. Patients with a vestibular loss will exhibit a corrective saccadic eye movement (a “catch-up” saccade) either during or after the head impulse. The video head impulse test can be performed in the horizontal plane (lateral vHIT) to evaluate function of the lateral semicircular canals, or in the vertical plane (LARP/RALP) to evaluate function of the anterior and posterior semicircular canals. This session will review the vHIT procedures, along with data analysis of normal and abnormal findings and identification of artifacts that may lead to inconclusive findings. Students will have an opportunity to participate in live demonstrations of the test procedures.
