Abstract: This study explores barriers clinicians perceive to impede acceptance of hearing aid recommendations and attempts to understand the role of the clinician in understanding the patient’s decision-making process. Findings indicate that “consulting with a significant other” and “cost” remain two of the most important factors. “Denial” was also highly ranked. Qualitative findings reinforce the impact of including significant others in the decision-making process as well as the importance clinicians place on cost as a perceived barrier. The study illustrated bifurcating behaviour patterns in how these issues were managed and possible training opportunities in better unpacking patient objections.
