Abstract: This study investigated the effect of a microphone and receiver-in-ear (M&RIE) module on subjective wind noise annoyance compared to omnidirectional microphones and digital wind noise reduction. Utilizing the web-based system SenseLabOnline, sixteen normal-hearing participants evaluated 9 wind noise recordings in relation to annoyance. The stimuli were pre-recorded on an acoustic manikin in a wind tunnel at a wind velocity of 5 m/s at incidence angles 0°, 135°, and 270° azimuth. The findings suggest that physical protection of the microphones from turbulent air flows is a more effective solution for the listener compared to wind noise reduction via signal processing.
