Abstract: Audiologists are often faced with difficult conversations about death and end-of-life (EOL) - whether the patient is “joking”, sharing a prognosis, or needs to work with their hearing healthcare provider on making decisions about their hearing healthcare as they near the end of their life. However, most audiologists are not formally educated in death, the emotion surrounding a terminal diagnosis and EOL, and are unsure and uncomfortable when faced with these conversations. This talk will provide evidence-based knowledge and recommendations for audiologists to have these hard conversations and discuss communication and the audiologists’ potential role at the EOL.

Utilize an evidence based approach when responding to patients who share a serious advanced illness or terminal diagnosis.
Describe the roles audiologist may play in communication at the end-of-life.
Understand the various components and recommendations of end-of-life care.
