Abstract: This research investigated the effect of headphone type on preferred listening levels. Preferred listening levels and ear canal SPL was determined for 34 college-age participants for in the ear, over the ear, and in the canal headphones while the same song was played in each ear. A two-factor MANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc analysis found a significant difference between the over the ear to the in the canal headphones ear canal SPL. Over the ear headphones were found to produce the lowest ear canal intensities while in the ear and in the canal headphones exceed recommended safe listening levels.
