Abstract: Many strategies have been developed to reduce wind noise interference in hearing aids and cochlear implants. These strategies can be grossly divided to into 1) counseling patients so that their instruments are positioned in the locations with the least wind noise, 2) changing the form factor of amplification devices, 3) adding wind screens to microphones, and 4) implementing digital signal processing algorithms to reduce wind noise interference. This discussion provides clinicians with in-depth understanding on how wind noise characteristics are used to develop wind noise reduction strategies and how to help patients increase comfort and speech understanding in wind noise.

Describe the spectral and temporal characteristics of wind noise generated by different styles of hearing aids in different wind incidence angles and at different wind speeds.
Describe wind noise reduction strategies offered in hearing aids and cochlear implants and their effectiveness and efficacy.
Apply the knowledge on wind noise characteristics and wind noise reduction strategies to hearing aid selection, fitting, and fine-tuning.
