Abstract: The Center for Disease Control has estimated that as many as 5.3 million Americans have a brain injury, and that a significant brain injury occurs approximately every 21 seconds. The rate of brain injury caused by blasts in the military is especially concerning. These brain injuries have extensive impact on an individual’s ability to function in everyday life. In addition, TBI patients report normal hearing on standard testing, but report significant hearing complaints. Comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can exacerbate these symptoms. This session addresses the challenges reported by patients with blast-related TBI who report hearing complaints without detectable hearing loss.

Learning Objectives:

Identify patients with TBI-related auditory complaints.
Describe how the changes in the auditory processing of those with TBI may impact hearing aid fitting.
Describe the considerations, fitting process and outcome measures that can be used with this population.
