Abstract: Direct drive technology stimulates the middle ear system by directly vibrating the eardrum or the ossicles. This approach provides numerous benefits over conventional acoustic stimulation. The present study evaluated perception of streamed speech in the presence of external noise at levels simulating real-world experiences including streaming phone calls in restaurants or airports. Results showed that despite high background noise levels, listeners are able to correctly repeat streamed speech indicating the dominance of direct drive path over acoustic drive.
