The session will describe exciting advances in brain imaging techniques, animal behavioral models and electrophysiological results used to identify the neural correlates of tinnitus and hyperacusis. Cochlear pathologies that often lead to tinnitus and hyperacusis typically reduce the neural activity sent from the cochlea to the central nervous system (CNS). To compensate for the reduced activity, the CNS increases its gain and functional connections. Experimental evidence suggest that tinnitus and hyperacusis arise from spontaneous and sound evoked hyperactivity and enhanced functional connectivity between auditory centers and other brain regions involved with emotion, memory, cognition and motor activity.
