Abstract: This research examines whether mask use poses challenges in listening effort and cognition. Further we identify rehabilitative strategies which can offset some of these difficulties. Our results provide much-needed information about clinical modifications that may allow an improved experience with face masks for both patients and providers in general healthcare settings.
Summary:This project examines mask use in a clinical setting and the difficulties it may pose during communication in a healthcare setting. This research is designed to examine how mask use may pose challenges between clinicians and their patients in audiology clinics and other medical clinics in the domains of communication, listening effort, cognition, and rehabilitation. Testing was conducted remotely through the software Qualtrics. Participants first received an email with the survey link and must consent to taking the survey. Total testing time was typically 10 minutes. The testing time depends on the participant. Results from this project provided needed information about the clinical modifications that may allow increased audibility and improved patient experience. Overall, results show that in healthcare settings there is increased cognitive load and listening effort for both patients and providers, and significantly more so for those with hearing loss.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to implement clinical modifications that may allow increased audibility and improved patient experience with face mask use during their medical appointments.
