Program Abstract: Our aim was to study the characteristics of mentoring programs that benefit (and do not benefit) women, racial/ethnic minorities, and first-generation college students and increase their retention and continuation in STEM. The hypothesis was that shared values and power dynamics drive the success (or failure) of mentoring underrepresented minority students in STEM. We specifically studied the impact of an experimental social networking technology platform and accompanying training program that explicitly incorporate shared values and account for power dynamics.
