Program Abstract: There is a disparity of underrepresented minorities in the STEM workforce and graduate studies, and a sustained support system (i.e., tutoring, academic advising, mentoring, research, and internship funding) may be needed for underrepresented minority (URM) students who enter college with lower ACT scores to support their success in rigorous first- and second-year STEM courses. Since 2018, Central State University’s STEM Success Center (SSC) has improved URM students’ preparation for STEM careers and graduate study. Data collected over three academic years indicate that students who participated in tutoring achieved better grades; 80 percent received at least a “C” in their class compared with 63 percent of students who didn’t participate. Similar patterns emerged concerning retention. Additionally, thirty-three students have engaged in internships through the SSC (17 completers). This session will help others considering implementing a STEM center to identify recruiting techniques that are engaging for students and produce positive results.
