Director, Science Learning Institute Foothill College, California, United States
The mission of the Science Learning Institute (SLI) is to advance equity and diversity in STEM at Foothill College by supporting students from underrepresented groups in their academic and career pathways in STEM. The presenters will discuss the types of programming opportunities available to students through SLI: 1) Summer Institute: Incoming first-year students participate in an immersive summer program focusing on data science, math preparation, and college readiness. 2) Internships: Paid part-time internships in the summer or micro-internships during the academic year. 3) Academic year STEM cohort: Students interested in exploring STEM are guided through their math and English requirements. Besides these, SLI organizes events such as the Diversity in STEM series, STEM Equity Seminars for Owls series, and STEMathon. Details about these programs are outlined on our web page: www.foothill.edu/sli. We will discuss the origin of SLI, its goals, funding models, student impact, successes, and challenges.
