The Strategic Undergraduate STEM Talent Acceleration Initiative (SUSTAIN) at Syracuse University features a coherent ecosystem of academic, social, and career support services strategically designed for a diverse cohort of high-achieving, low-income STEM scholars during their undergraduate program. SUSTAIN provides participants with a robust, multifaceted series of curricular and cocurricular learning experiences, scholarship funding, and professional development experiences designed to a) foster their sense of preparedness for collegiate STEM work, b) enhance their access and motivation to pursue STEM pathways, and c) provide the academic and social supports necessary to ensure their persistence in the STEM pipeline. Our research has demonstrated the efficacy of the SUSTAIN model for broadening participation in undergraduate STEM by generating more positive STEM socialization experiences and a greater sense of science identity development among these marginalized student populations. Our interactive session will focus on the potential to replicate the SUSTAIN model across diverse undergraduate STEM programs.
