VISIONS Workshop: Understanding and Interrupting Modern-isms in STEM

Program Abstract: Join three experienced diversity, equity, inclusion, and organizational cultural change consultants who are deeply invested in transformational change in STEM settings and/or have long STEM careers themselves in an experiential workshop about how historical inequities replicate themselves in STEM environments and interventions for interrupting them. VISIONS has been working with clinical, research-oriented, and higher education institutions for nearly four decades and offers a multi-level approach to implementing culture shifts that create equitable and inclusive environments. Session participants will learn about how modern forms of the -isms create the conditions in which historical inequities are replicated and persist even in the absence of bigotry, with the discussion and activities focused on how this manifests in STEM settings at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels. We will conclude by thinking through strategies that participants can use to begin to interrupt these dynamics in their spheres of influence.
