Program Abstract: This session will discuss the implications of a qualitative interview study with STEM faculty conducted at a midsized research-intensive state institution. Data collection was in the context of a National Science Foundation grant designed to increase retention and success of groups underrepresented in STEM. In the spring of 2022, as part of the grant assessment, an interview study was conducted with faculty serving as advisors and mentors. Interview questions explored faculty perception of how and in what environment they are best able to support students in developing a STEM identity. Additional questions addressed the immediate higher education context, probing understanding and valuing of equity and inclusion in STEM, and perceptions of the impact of the pandemic on student learning. We will share findings and discuss the need to address faculty members' often unexplored but highly consequential beliefs, which can have a measurable and inequitable impact on student success.
