Program Abstract:,College algebra is one of the most often-failed college courses, which is bad given that over one million students take it each year (Lutzer et al., 2007). At American Public University System, a large comprehensive online university, MATH110 College Algebra is the highest-enrolled course, with over 10,000 enrollments in 2021, taught by 87 faculty in over 400 sections. Prior to our efforts, about3/4 of the students who started the course successfully completed it. While still above the national average of 50% (Saxe and Braddy, 2015), we knew that we could do better. Through 3 targeted efforts (faculty alignment, faculty training, and course redesign), we were able to improve the success rate of the course to over 90 percent. Our efforts demonstrate this almost universally offered course does not need to be mired in low success that can prevent students from continuing in STEM disciplines and from reaching their goals.
