Advancing STEM Equity Efforts by Institutionalizing Professional Development Centering Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Program Abstract: S-STEM programs offer a unique opportunity to embed culturally responsive practices in program components and work on long-term institutional sustainability. The National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Scholars 2.0 Program (#2030890) is a scholarship grant that embeds culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in all interventions with the scholars, including an ongoing training on CRP teaching and mentoring for faculty mentoring our STEM students. Two years into the program, we leveraged our pilot model developed for the NSF grant to advance professional development in CRP to the entire institution using Title III funds to create the Culturally Responsive & Equity in Education (CREED) Fellows Program. In this session, the presenters will share their process for developing, implementing, and scaling up an equity-centered professional development program for faculty and staff. Participants will have the opportunity to explore ways to develop and/or scale up their equity-centered initiatives.
