Biomedical Sciences CTE Faculty Westminster High School, United States
Program Abstract: The STEM Mentor Internship: A Near-Peer Collaboration is a community-engaged partnership between STEM undergraduates at the University of Denver and high school seniors in the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Sciences program at Westminster High School, guided by respective faculty at each institution. The goal of this collaboration is to provide an opportunity for students at both levels to connect and engage with their local community and grow in their knowledge, experience, and understanding of mentoring and STEM career paths, particularly for students from historically underrepresented groups. This near-peer mentoring design aims to provide STEM college students a semi-structured opportunity to reflect on their paths to date and provide insight into the successes and challenges they've faced in their college-going experience. The design also aims to help high school students prepare as well as possible for post-graduation opportunities and become thoughtfully informed about future STEM career paths.
