Prof. Irit Ben-Aharon is the Director of the Oncology Division at Rambam Health Care Campus, the largest cancer center in northern Israel, located in Haifa, and affiliated to the Technion.
Prof. Ben-Aharon completed the MD-PhD joint program of Tel-Aviv University and the National Institute of Health's (NIH) and was awarded her PhD in developmental biology. Prof. Ben-Aharon completed oncology residency at Davidoff Center, Rabin Medical Center, followed by a visiting fellowship in oncofertility at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, and a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York as a Fulbright scholar focused on gastrointestinal malignancies and young-onset cancer. Prof. Ben-Aharon returned to Israel in 2015, and led the gastrointestinal oncology at Davidoff Cancer Center, Rabin Medical Center. In 2018, she was appointed as the director of the Division of Oncology at Rambam Health Care Center. Her laboratory is located at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion.
Prof. Ben-Aharon's main research interests are in:
- The toxic effects of anti-cancer treatments on fertility and blood vessels.
- The effect of chemotherapy during pregnancy
- The biology of young-onset cancers of the digestive system.
- COVID outcomes in cancer patients.
She has published numerous manuscripts on these subjects in prestigious medical journals and has been awarded competitive research grants and prizes. Prof. Ben-Aharon is actively involved in international organizations in Europe and USA and serves as the head of young-onset colorectal cancer task force in the EORTC.
