All edema is lymphatic fluid; meaning all edema is essentially lymphedema. Edema or swelling may be transient or permanent depending on whether the lymphatic system is insufficient or permanently impaired. This session will explore what that means for the healthcare provider and how to best manage edema clinically. Current evidence will be presented on the role of the endothelial glycocalyx layer as the molecular sieve that controls all fluid and its relationship with the lymphatics, integument, and circulatory system.
