Like all other organs skin can fail, however experts continue to grapple with definitions, causative factors, and manifestations. This talk will review pathophysiologic mechanisms that contribute to skin failure and present a model uniting an array of overlapping nomenclatures and clinical phenomena that include terminal ulceration and unavoidable pressure injuries. The goal is to create a path for researchers and clinicians to further study skin failure, develop algorithms and biologic markers to further clarify the diagnosis, and supply a clear rationale for adapting uniform and consistent language across the healthcare continuum.
