Oxygen plays a key role in all stages of wound healing. Despite the critical need for oxygen, levels are frequently insufficient in patients with chronic wounds due to a variety of systemic disease states. Low levels of oxygen in the wounded tissues will prolong healing. Therefore, it stands to reason that supplying additional oxygen to wounds may promote healing. This session will examine the use of supplemental oxygen therapy by way of both hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and topical oxygen (TO) for the treatment of chronic wounds.
