Clinicians continue to better understand biofilm’s impact in hard to heal wounds, which typically have an uncertain healing trajectory because of underlying host comorbidities as well as local factors that impede healing. Wound Hygiene, an international consensus-based protocol of care, continues to gain clinical acceptance as a straightforward, structured strategy to address the challenges caused by bioburden in these hard to heal wounds.
The Wound Hygiene protocol includes wound cleansing, debridement, refashioning the edges, and choosing an appropriate antimicrobial wound dressing. The protocol should be initiated at the patient’s first visit to the wound care clinician, following a full holistic assessment to identify wound etiology and comorbidities, and then implemented at every dressing change.
This session will address the efficacy of implementing Wound Hygiene including AQUACEL® Ag Advantage, an antimicrobial developed to manage biofilm within the dressing. The discussion will be enhanced with clinical cases providing real-world evidence of the protocol in practice.
Participants in this session will be able to: -Identify the 4 steps of the Wound Hygiene protocol, and strategies to incorporate the protocol into clinical practice. -Describe the evolution of wound care dressing technology to address the challenges of hard to heal wounds impacted by tenacious bioburden. -Define appropriate treatment strategies for improving outcomes in hard to heal wounds.
