Session Description: Through funding provided to The Council of State Governments (CSG) by the Department of Defense (DoD), CSG is working with partners in the dental profession to create an interstate occupational licensure compact for dentists and dental hygienists. Interstate occupational licensure compacts promote license portability and multistate practice for practitioners, enhance public protection and provide regulatory certainty for military spouses in licensed professions as they transition among states.
This session will outline the history, purpose, benefits, and governance of interstate occupational licensure compacts, detail the licensure compact development process and provide an update on the status of the dentistry and dental hygiene licensure compact. Implications for providers who wish to practice in multiple states, tele-practitioners, mobile providers and military spouses in dentistry and dental hygiene will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize variances in licensure requirements between states that make transferring a license difficult especially for certain populations, including military spouses who are impacted by inconsistency in licensure requirements.
Understand the benefits provided by licensure compacts like creating reciprocal professional licensing practices between states, ensuring the quality and availability of qualified professionals, enhancing public protection and safeguarding state sovereignty.
Identify examples of occupational licensure compacts developed by other health care professions and their broad use by states
Examine the steps required to implement a licensure compact including: development, enactment, and governance processes.
Explain why interstate occupational licensure compacts are a more thorough, stable and durable method for resolving state licensure issues than universal recognition laws or licensure by endorsement models.
