Session Description: Tiny House, Teledentistry, and the Traditional Health Worker- Blazing Access for Rural Communities is Capitol Dental Care Outreach Program’s exciting integration effort in one of Oregon’s largest counties. In 2021 our tiny house dental clinic launched in rural Lane County, home of thousands of community members adversely affected by geography and dental health professional shortages. In 2019 wildfires ravaged Lane County creating even more health care shortages. This session will share how we utilize a Community Health Worker to engage with local communities to reach persons who have not engaged in dental services in over a year. We will share the behavioral health and social determinants of health assessments used to help identify additional needs to make appropriate referrals to mental and behavioral health providers in the community. Lastly, we will share the challenges, successes and opportunities which we feel can be replicated in other settings and in other states.
Learning Objectives:
Describe rationale for utilizing a tiny house clinic rather than mobile dental unit (motor home-style).
Evaluate the importance of the Traditional Health Worker role in this project.
List two specific assessments that can identify patient needs for referrals and navigation assistance.
