Abstract: Objective: The relationship between systemic health and oral health is well demonstrated, however, the evidence for Medical-Dental Integration Models (MDIs) has not been extensively reviewed. We are conducting a review focused on understanding how integrated care and the MDI model have been delivered for the past ten years. The study will report the successes and failures of current models and highlight future opportunities for medical-dental integration from systems thinking approach.
Methods: This review examined research, white paper, research briefs, environmental scans, and policy reports published between 2010-2020 on the medical-dental integrated model. Studies and reports published on the medical-dental integrated model were included as available in electronic databases, including MEDLINE via PubMed, Ovid Med, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Additionally, reports and white papers published by universities, policy centers, foundations, Safety Net organizations, and other organizations were included in the review. The review will tease out the models from the studies, implementation strategies, and evaluate the successes and failures of the published literature.
Results: The initial results from this review synthesized the successes of the MDI model with important consideration given to the populations served and the cultural-social contexts in which the models were implemented. The final results will provide best practices for health settings to integrate and expand their own practices while leveraging the successes of MDI over the past ten years.
Conclusion: The results from our review can be used to shape medical and dental education reform and inform policymakers of the benefits gained from MDI models.
