Abstract: In Riverside County, California, as in many other parts of the country, there are severe shortages of dental providers willing and able to see low-income children, particularly those from birth to 5. This session will describe a system that uses home visitors—equipped with an assessment tool, training, and educational materials—as the front-end of a dental care system to keep as many children healthy as possible, reducing the need for all families to visit a dental office.
The system involves training home visitors about basic oral health concepts, assessment of family’s oral health knowledge and habits, and use of a cloud-based data collection and tracking system.
Outcomes included positive evaluations of the training and tools and program from home and families, and demonstration of the ability of home visitors to support families in adopting “oral healthy habits” without the need for referral of all families to a dental office.
