Abstract: Objective: The objective of this oral session is to describe action taken by AAPHD since the spring 2021 publication of the white paper, “Anti-Racism in Dental Public Health: A Call to Action” (https://www.aaphd.org/assets/Webinars/White%20paper%20FINAL%20July%202021.pdf): a special issue of JPHD devoted to antiracism.
Methods: As a statement to offer an organization perspective on the police murder of George Floyd, and the anti-Asian violence and inequities associated with the pandemic, the white paper was a call to action for how dental public health would both take action and hold itself accountable in supporting antiracism. To further develop and disseminate knowledge related to antiracism in dental public health, a Special Issue of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry is being developed with support from AAPHD. The issue is funded by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health and support from AAPHD.
Results: The issue includes 18 articles that span original research, commentaries, and action reports on various topics relating to DPH science, education, policy, and practice. These articles add to the body of knowledge in this area and provide best practices for future research and program development.
Conclusion: The white paper and special issue aim to support dental public health practitioners in having the resources to apply antiracism in their professional work. AAPHD looked for continued opportunities to engage in their work, and help lead the way for how our profession can be antiracist in how we work, serve, and collaborate with populations and our fellow professionals.
