Community health workers (CHWs) are increasingly recognized as valued care team members who help link individuals to services, provide education and health promotion, address social determinants of health (SDOH), and advance racial and health equity. CHWs provide culturally competent care and represent the communities that they serve. A 2021 survey by the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) found that nearly half of state Medicaid programs reimburse CHWs, and several states specifically engage CHWs in oral health services. This roundtable will provide a forum to learn about state examples of CHW engagement in oral health, to discuss policy options for engaging CHWs in oral health services and promotion, and to explore related opportunities to facilitate medical-dental integration in Medicaid.
