Session Description: This highly interactive workshop will introduce participants to various health datasets available to conduct oral health research. We will provide an overview of some of the commonly used datasets, including populations targeted, data design, and types of questions available to examine oral health. This will be followed by specific information and demonstration on two publicly available survey datasets- National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). The NHANES is the primary data source for national oral health indicators such as dental caries, untreated dental decay, and dental sealants. MEPS is the most complete source of data on the cost and use of health care services and health insurance coverage, including dental care. Finally, we will share information about claims data and its use in oral health research, and briefly discuss IBM Watson Marketscan Medicaid and Commercial Claims Data datasets as an example.
