Session Description: Many people with low oral health literacy do not know what fluoride is, what it does or why it is beneficial to drink fluoridated water. Yet a recent study revealed that the websites of most state health departments either do not provide information about fluoridation or post content that is hard to find or hard to comprehend. In this session, two of the study’s authors will review their findings and offer suggestions for what state oral health programs or other stakeholders can do to improve the quality and accessibility of their web content. This session offers insights and guidance that can inform broader efforts to improve online content about oral health.
Learning Objectives:
Describe why web content should be developed with a recognition of low levels of oral health literacy
Define what it means to write web content in plain language
Conduct a review of existing web content to understand the challenges that visitors may encounter to find basic information about fluoride or other oral health prevention strategies
