Session Description: A great oral health story strategically placed in the right media is worth its weight in gold! Trouble is, securing this media coverage isn’t easy. The right media coverage can not only raise public awareness, it can convince policymakers to act. Careful planning, strategic thinking, and often the right timing, are just a few of the considerations necessary to get newspapers, blogs, TV, radio, or online media interested in your story. This session will help attendees recognize what is newsworthy and why, offer tips on choosing media targets, and outline the elements needed to write a successful media pitch. Presenters will walk through the steps needed to prepare for media outreach and then act as reporters for participants to pitch their oral health story ideas using the tools that have just learned.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand the elements that determine whether your report, event, or initiative is newsworthy
• Recognize the factors that determine the right media to target for outreach
• Be able to write a pitch message that is compelling and will get covered by the media
